Welcome to my blog

This blog is for people who are thinking that they might have to file bankruptcy. I have been helping people work through their financial problems for so many years that I know the concerns that come up again and again. I want to provide practical information that you can use right now in helping decide how to take on these complicated issues.

Do you want to try to set up a payment plan with the IRS or the Oregon Department of Revenue?

You can create an account with either of these taxing agencies and make a payment proposal, all on-line. To set up an account, you need to have a cell phone in your name, a recent collection letter or a copy of your most recent tax returns and an account number for a bill, like a credit card, car loan or home loan, that would show up on your credit report.

You will also need to be willing to set up a payment to be taken directly from a bank account. You may want to open an account at a different bank just for this purpose! Go to

https://www.irs.gov/payments/online-payment-agreement-application

for the IRS or to

https://revenueonline.dor.oregon.gov/tap/_/

for the Oregon Department of Revenue.

The ODR wants the first payment within 45 days and the whole balance to be paid within 18 months. The IRS might give you as much as 84 months to pay!

However, neither the IRS nor the ODR will set up a payment plan if you have missing tax returns.
